Rising from the surf, Sideshow is proud to present the Aspen Premium Format™ Figure from the acclaimed comic series Fathom.
Created by the late, great Michael Turner, Aspen Matthews is a beautiful and accomplished marine biologist with a mysterious past. As an elite member of the mysterious race called the Blue, Aspen Matthews can manipulate water to her will, using it to create tsunamis and to even turn her physical body into water.
Designer JP Mavinga explains, “The word ‘Fathom’ has multiple meanings in the context of Turner’s work. First and foremost, it evokes the idea of deep ocean depths where Aspen’s power comes from. Secondly, it means to understand or imagine, which ties in to the fantastical elements of the world Turner created for readers.”
The Aspen Premium Format™ Figure stands 22” tall atop a helix of water, which swirls and swells under her command. Aspen is stepping through the surf with ease, with windswept hair and a comfortable, confident pose featuring semi-translucent legs as her aquatic abilities are at work. The stunning base is painted with a color gradient to capture that sense of the boundless ocean at her command. Fans of the Fathom legacy will recognize Ernie the seahorse frolicking in the waves beneath her feet.
Mavinga further elaborates, “Turner’s artwork had many distinct, recognizable traits. He incorporated a lot of fluid and natural forms into his drawings, from the curve of bodies to flowing hair and water. On the other side of that were asymmetrical armors and technology that had very hard textures with very specific visual rhythms that would repeat throughout his designs. That unique style really comes through on this Aspen figure.”
Aspen is decorated with various belts and straps as well as an intricate, asymmetrical armor sculpted to look like oceanic elements native to the home of the Blue. The jagged plates and intricate panels against her natural form create the visual contrast for which Michael Turner’s work is famous. |
